Taylor Rental expands to Saranac Lake

SARANAC LAKE — Taylor Rental has opened a new store in Saranac Lake to join its Plattsburgh location.

Owner and President Chris Akey said the new location opened in late July at 372 Broadway, near Adirondack Medical Center. Brad Idzik is the manager of the new store, which also includes Farm and Family and Party Plus.

“It’s our fifth week. A lot of people are excited to see us down here,” he said.

While the three businesses are the same as those in Plattsburgh and offer many of the same products, Idzik said the inventory is on a smaller scale.

He said they saw a chance to expand to Saranac Lake as a logical growth, as they had a number of customers from that area who used the Plattsburgh store.

“It seemed like a natural progression for us,” Idzik said.

The decor is similar, with a large Husqvarna display that features a number of that company’s products. There is another display that feature the Milwaukee line of power tools and attachments.

Idzik said it’s important to note Taylor Rental offers both retail sales and rentals of equipment and tools.

“Chris does a great job of keeping our rental fleet like new, with low hours (of operation),” he said.

The Party Plus business shares inventory with the Plattsburgh location. It features a full line of party tents as well as supplies, games, equipment and inflatables.

“It’s been growing on a daily basis. It’s going to be huge down here,” Idzik said.

The Farm and Family side of the business is focused on clothing and footwear, mainly the type of items a contractor or construction worker might need. Idzik said the Saranac Lake inventory is presently more safety-related items, such as work boots, safety glasses, hard hats, reflective clothing and rain gear.

He hopes to expand the number of choices as business builds.

The businesses have been well received in just five weeks, Idzik said.

“People seem to be pretty excited about another locally owned option,” he said.

Idzik said he graduated from Paul Smith’s College in 1998. He now lives in Saranac, but said it’s nice to be working in the Saranac Lake area.

The new location has four employees, two from the Saranac area and two from Saranac Lake.

Akey said Taylor Rental opened in Plattsburgh in 2005. The store carries everything from lawn and garden equipment to heavy equipment that would be used by a large contractor.

He also said the party supply side of the business has expanded rapidly. They even offer a free computer-assisted design service to help layout what’s needed to throw a great party, whether it’s a small birthday party or a large wedding and reception.

“The party business has been our strong point this year,” Akey said. “Inflatable bounce houses have taken off.”

The Plattsburgh location underwent an extensive reorganization in 2011. That has worked out quite well, he said.
