25 YEARS AGO — 1987
▶ Ticonderoga resident Robert Ledger continues waiting hopefully for the return of his 30-year-old developmentally disabled son, Brian. Brian wandered away from his home at an Association for Retarded Citizens apartment Jan. 3 and was last seen hitchhiking on Route 22 near the Washington County town of Putnam.
▶ Robert Thomas and his 18-year-old son left Lake Placid to return to their Ohio home with a new near-death experience tucked under their belt. The pair, along with another hiker, were stranded for three days at the top of Mount Marcy with nothing but minimal amounts of food and sleeping bags to protect them from the elements. Thomas was prepared to give up hope on the third day before the party was found by a forest ranger helicopter. Thomas's son suffered frostbite to his feet and may have permanent damage, while the third member of their party, Christopher Rocco, suffered minor frostbite on his face and hands.
▶ Iggy Pop will be opening for the Pretenders at the Plattsburgh State University Field House this week, more than 600 tickets already having been sold at the college center desk, not including the sales at Peacock Records in downtown Plattsburgh. Extensive media coverage of the band's stay in Plattsburgh has helped increase public interest in the event.
▶ Paul Smith's College Hotel Saranac has installed a new state of the art VingCard security system. The program, donated by Michael Iveson, president of VingCard Systems Inc., is currently installed in all of the hotel's guest rooms. The program replaces the old lock and key system with a card swipe system, greatly enhancing the security of the rooms. The new system is valued at approximately $25,000.
50 YEARS AGO — 1962
▶ The Clinton County Sheriff's Department is investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred just outside Plattsburgh. The accident involved Plattsburgh resident Harold S. Meyers and an unknown driver. Meyers' vehicle was sideswiped by another that quickly left the scene.
▶ After selling its sales and office building on Protection Avenue, The Dock & Coal Co. is building an addition to its building on Dock Street. The addition is estimated to cost $6,700, according to a building permit filed with Robert H. Ladue this week. The company's Protection Avenue building is scheduled for demolition and will be replaced with a parking lot.
▶ Press-Republican editor William K. Babel announced that Mary M. Bolich has joined the editorial staff of the Press-Republican as a general assignment reporter. Bolich, formerly of Shenandoah, Pa., graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor's degree in journalism.
▶ Peter Finkenbinder, 13, of Rouses Point suffered a back injury while coasting and was brought to the Champlain Valley Hospital. Finkerbinder suffered his injuries when his sled ran into a dock off Lake Street.
75 YEARS AGO — 1937
▶ Plans have been set in Plattsburgh for the fourth-annual President's Ball, this one celebrating F.D.R. The ball is being organized by Martin D. Mannix and is scheduled to be held at the end of the month. Dances will be held at the Witherill and Cumberland hotels, along with the Elks Club. Mayor Leander A. Bouyea urges every citizen to wholeheartedly support the event.
▶ Micheal Shields, 38, of Saranac was fatally wounded while felling a tree with Harry Canning on Canning's farm. According to Canning, Shields began to run when the tree started to fall and was struck across the shoulders. The tree was prevented from crushing the man entirely when it landed on a woodpile. Shields was admitted into the Champlain Valley Hospital where he was found to have suffered a fractured pelvis, ruptured bladder and a broken back. He died later that day.
▶ Plattsburgh Police reported that the burglars who broke into the Bouyea Baking Co. office made off with between $500 and $600 cash from a safe in the building. The burglars entered the office by removing a small window pane and unbolting the window from the inside. They recovered the combination to the safe and the keys to the locked money box inside through a desk drawer. All evidence indicates that the burglars were well-acquainted with the bakery.
▶ The Plattsburgh Fire Department had to extinguish two grass fires, the first on West Cornelia Street and the second at the Old Catholic Cemetery just two hours later. The department commented on the strangeness of grass fires in the second week of January.
100 YEARS AGO — 1912
▶ Raised in Plattsburgh, H.A. Morrison is the current manager of the "Chorus Lady" company that has been booked to appear at the Plattsburgh Theater.
▶ Wallace Turner was elected president of the Clinton County Agricultural Society for the upcoming year at a meeting of the stockholders of the society.
▶ A South Catherine Street fire destroyed three houses, amounting to $8,000 damage. A fire brigade from the Plattsburgh Barracks assisted local firemen in controlling the fire. Six families were rendered homeless in the nearly below-zero temperatures.
▶ Twenty-five people lost their jobs with the closing of Rouses Point's printing press, the Lakeside Press, which was owned by Phillips & Casey.
