---- — CANTON (AP) — Former North Country Congressman David O’Brien Martin has died at the age of 68.
The O’Leary Funeral Home in Canton says Martin died Tuesday night at his home in Hedgesville, W. Va., under the care of hospice. The cause of his death was not released.
Martin, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966 to 1970, was a member of the State Assembly from 1977 to 1980. He was elected to Congress in 1980 and served until 1993, when he declined to run again.
He is credited with helping persuade the U.S. Army to station the reactivated 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum near Watertown.
“The North Country has lost a friend today with the passing of David O’Brien Martin,” said Congressman Bill Owens (D-Plattsburgh).
“Mr. Martin served his country and his community with honor and distinction. He will be missed, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family this holiday season.”
Funeral services were pending Wednesday.
