Saranac woman charged with rape

DANNEMORA — A Saranac woman has been arrested on a rape charge.

Shelly L. Fountain, 37, of was taken into custody at about 9:15 a.m. Aug. 11 on charges stemming from an incident where she supplied a teenage male with alcohol and later engaged in sexual intercourse with him, Plattsburgh-based State Police Investigator Glenn Huber said.

She was charged with third-degree rape, a felony.

Under New York state law, a person may be found guilty of third-degree rape when, being age 21 or more, he or she engages in sexual intercourse with a person under age 17.

Fountain was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child and first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child, both misdemeanors.

She was arraigned in Dannemora Village Court before Justice Daniel Lucia.

Fountain was released on her own recognizance, Huber said, and the case is still under investigation.

She is scheduled to reappear in court on Monday, Aug. 20.

If a person is convicted, third-degree rape is punishable by up to four years in prison.
