PLATTSBURGH — CVPH Medical Center has received national accolades for its remodeled lobby and reception areas.
Health Care Design magazine, which focuses on issues involving the architecture of medical facilities, selected CVPH as best in the category for renovated and remodeled lobbies and reception areas from more than 125 facilities nationwide.
"I enjoy walking through this lobby every day," said CVPH Medical Center President and Chief Executive Officer Stephens Mundy, as he and other hospital officials announced the recognition Thursday morning. "The previous lobby was a great place to wait for a ride. I had never seen anyone sitting in it.
"When you walk through now, you'll see people sitting, relaxing, taking solace. It's an area where patients and family can sit down with somewhat privacy in a public area."
The renovated lobby opened in November 2008 as part of the major expansion that added nine new surgery suites, support space and patient-registration areas.
"It acts as a focal point and provides access to every area of the hospital," said Chris Booth, associate vice president of facilities for CVPH.
"It's an entrance point to our patient registration, our medical floors and through this hallway (left of the main entrance) to the medical offices."
Both Mundy and Booth praised the teamwork that went into designing the lobby, a significance that was highlighted by the project architect, Jerry Switzer of Morris Switzer: Environments for Health, LLC.
"Everything that is done well is done together," Switzer said. "We've enjoyed an almost 20-year collaboration between ourselves and the entire staff at CVPH."
Health Care Design chose five finalists from the initial list of facilities being considered and allowed the magazine's readership to choose the winner.
"They echoed almost everything that we intended to represent in this design," Switzer said, noting that the magazine's readers appreciated the friendly atmosphere and open space stressed in the lobby's design. "It's gratifying that just by looking at the facility, our intent was identified."
"We wanted a new entrance and lobby that represented the quality and level of care for which this Medical Center is known," Mundy added. "This is a beautiful, highly functional, welcoming lobby and reception area."
A lot of the design concepts centered on the lobby's key focal point, the stained-glass window created by Jacque Duval that used to adorn the hospital's chapel when it was adjacent to the old lobby.
"It's the crowning jewel," Mundy said as he looked up toward the window, located on the second floor on the lobby's eastern wall.
"It works perfectly with the overall design," Booth added.
Booth also praised the general contractor, Pizzagalli Construction, and the numerous local subcontractors who worked on the project. Officials noted the project was finished on time and under budget.
