Complete listings of area events can be found in Thursday's Out & About section and in the Community Calendar, which appears every Friday in the Press-Republican, but here are the highlights of what is happening today:
City of Plattsburgh Fourth of July Celebration. Parade at 2 p.m., starting at Wilcox Dock, with the theme Quadricentennial Celebration. Lineup at Wilcox Dock at noon, then parade route will go down Cumberland Avenue from Wilcox Dock to Cornelia Street, to Margaret Street, ending behind Stafford Middle School. The band Angry Neighbors plays at the City Beach at 6 p.m.; fireworks at the City Beach at 9 p.m. People attending events at the beach will be charged $5 per carload; walk-ins are free.
Rouses Point Fourth of July celebration. 10 a.m., Civic Center. Live bands, food, carnival rides, games, vendors, activities. At 10 a.m., the Point Au Fer Racing Club will hold its Samuel de Champlain Cup race, starting from in front of the Anchorage, watch from the shore or from boat for free; Kid's Day will start at 10 a.m. at the Civic Center; villagewide garage sale starts at 8 a.m.
Essex Fourth of July. Firecracker Fun Run for adults at 8:30 a.m.; Firecracker Fun Run for kids at 9:15 a.m.; hymn sing at 10 a.m. at St. John's Church; parade starts at 11 a.m.; activities throughout afternoon at Beggs Point Park.
Westport Fourth of July celebration. Parade at noon, followed by activities at Lee Park throughout afternoon, including races and magic show.
Jay Fourth of July. Parade starts at noon on Main Street, hamlet of Jay; carnival to follow at Jay Fire Department.
Saranac Lake Independence Day. 9 a.m., Saranac Lake Village Market in Riverside Park; 1 p.m., second-annual Patriotic Boat Parade, with kayakers and canoeists invited to join in the event, to be held on Lake Flower. Mayor Thomas Michael will judge the event, with the winner and runnerup each receiving a trophy. Boats assemble at 12:30 p.m. behind a lead boat and proceed along a proscribed route to the Riverside Park's public boat decks, where judging will take place. 7 p.m., free concert in the park, courtesy of Curtis Lumber, featuring the Dust Bunnies (Tracy Posdzich, Mary Lou Reid and Shamim Allen) and the Long Hares (Kyle Murray, Colin DeHond and Ned P. Rauch); at dusk, the annual Independence Day Firework Display, sponsored by the Village of Saranac Lake, will be set off from the New York State Boat Launch, adjacent to Riverside Park.
Lake Placid Fourth of July. Parade starting at 5 p.m. at the Olympic Center and ending at the High Peaks Resort. Richard "Dick" and Diana Feldman are grand marshals. More than 20 floats and two musical groups, the Gouverneur High School marching band and the St. Andrews Society of the Adirondacks, will participate. The 20th-annual "Set the Night to Music" fireworks display begins at 9:45 p.m. over Mirror Lake, synchronized to music that can be heard live on WSLP 93.3 FM.
Lake Placid I Love BBQ Festival. Olympic Speed-Skating Oval, Lake Placid. National grilling competition sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. Junior Barbecue competition takes place today. Children's activities, cooking demonstrations by area chefs and barbecue team pit masters, two appearances by Zydeco music legend C.J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band, performances by 10 area bands.
100th-annual Saint Regis Falls Fire Department Field Day. 11 a.m. parade through downtown to the fire station. Chicken barbecue and entertainment in the municipal park. Raffles, food vendors, legal beverages, displays, exhibits. Performers include bagpipers, All That Jazz dancers, cloggers and the Waverly Band. Belly Buttons the Clown at 12:30 p.m., Bob Shelley's magic show at 4 p.m., live deejay music by Bernie Brown throughout the afternoon, followed by a concert by Misguided from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., and fireworks show at dusk over the St. Regis River.
Magpie. 2 p.m. John Brown Farm, John Brown Road, Lake Placid. Songs from their CD, "John Brown Sword of the Spirit." Free. Bring a blanket.
"Round and Round the Garden." 7 p.m. Depot Theatre, Westport Train Station, Westport. Alan Ayckbourn's comedy about an assistant librarian who believes everyone has the right to happiness when it comes to women and proceeds to woo his sister-in-law, his brother-in-law's wife and finally, his own wife. $23 adults; $20 seniors and students; $14 under 12. 962-4449.
Center for the Arts Auction. 10 a.m. Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, Blue Mountain Lake. Annual live auction. Benefits programs at the center.
Saranac Lake Village Farmers Market. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saranac Lake Riverside Park. Fresh, locally produced no-spray vegetables and herbs, artisan organic cheese from grass-fed cows, goat cheese, yogurt, soap, free-range chicken, duck, goose, and eggs, fresh-baked breads, pastries, ready-to-eat soups, snacks, beverages, maple syrup, artwork and crafts.
Library Open House and Book Sale. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library in Rouses Point. Bounce house and other activities free.
Chateaugay Lakes Farmers Market. Open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, on lawn of the Hollywood Inn, Route 374, Merrill.
Nonperishable food collection. Plattsburgh State Upward Bound students will be collecting canned and non-perishable food items in the neighborhoods nearby the Plattsburgh State campus. The students will be wearing Upward Bound T-shirts to identify themselves. The food will be donated to the JCEO and Ecumenical food shelves of Plattsburgh.
30th-annual chicken barbecue. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Schroon Lake Community Church, Main Street. Eat in or take out. $10 each.
Plattsburgh Farmers and Crafters Market. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Durkee Street Pavilion, downtown Plattsburgh. Fresh local organic vegetables, fruits and bedding plants. Baked goods. Many arts and crafters. Fresh strawberries. Music by Bluegrass duo, Staber and Chasnoff. Free raffle, gift donated by a vendor. Master gardener available.
Citizens Bank Summer Skating Series. 7:30 p.m., Olympic Center, Lake Placid. Featuring Olympian Emily Hughes and Jason Wong. Adults, $9; juniors and seniors, $7; 6 and under, free.
