Don’t state as a fact something that is unsubstantiated or that our editors wouldn't know to be true.

Don’t presume someone’s guilt in a case when it hasn't been established by a court.

Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

We monitor comments Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Approval of comments outside these times may be delayed.

PLATTSBURGH — Little changed after accused killer Anthony V. Pavone appeared Tuesday for a pre-trial conference.

Pavone and his attorney, William Meconi, appeared in the chambers of Judge Patrick McGill, with Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie present.

Wylie said the conference was held to schedule hearing dates and for the defense to provide the court and DA's Office with an updated status report from Dr. Kevin Gitlin, a local psychiatrist hired by the defense to evaluate whether Pavone suffered from mental disease or defect when he allegedly shot and killed Patricia Howard and Timothy Carter in the Town of Dannemora on Jan. 31.

At the hearing, Meconi reported that Gitlin is on vacation through Sept. 13 and has yet to provide his report or information about his analysis of Pavone.

Wylie said in a press release that the defense has failed to raise specifics on what mental disease or defect Pavone may have suffered from on Jan. 31.

No hearing dates were scheduled, pending the outcome of Gitlin's report.

Wylie said that his office has made every effort to move the case along and is ready to proceed to trial.

Pavone, 53, of Morrisonville remains in Clinton County Jail without bail pending his trial, which is scheduled to begin Oct. 12.

He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
