City park funding approved

PLATTSBURGH — With funding approved, the Melissa L. Penfield and South Acres parks will soon undergo much-needed improvements.

City of Plattsburgh councilors approved the $100,000 endeavor during the Common Council meeting Thursday evening, hoping the effort will address ongoing complaints and concerns of many who use the parks and baseball fields each year.

Work at Penfield Park is expected to include improvements to infield and outfield drainage systems, as well as leveling the infield, which is about three inches lower than the outfield and causes severe water problems in wet weather.

The city also plans to increase the height of the outfield fences and move a number of lighting fixtures away from the playing area.

South Acres Park is also expected to see improvements to its drainage system.

Work should begin at both parks by the end of the month and will take about two to three weeks to be completed.

The parks are popular recreational destinations during the summer months, hosting dozens of high school and Little League games.
