Busy holiday weekend expected at border

CHAMPLAIN — U.S. Customs and Border Protection is advising people that the border with Canada will be busy this weekend because of the long Labor Day holiday.

Travelers planning trips across the border into the United States need to have the proper identification documents.

They can obtain local border traffic conditions by visiting the website www.cbp.gov.

People can also get a "Know Before You Go" brochure, which is also available on the website and provides information, including duty exemptions and restricted and prohibited merchandise.

Individuals should be prepared to declare all items acquired outside the United States.

Approved travel documents include a valid Passport, U.S. Passport card, Trusted Traveler card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST) or an Enhanced Driver License.

Children under the age of 16 can present an original or copy of their birth certificate.

County to hold Hazardous Waste Day

ELIZABETHTOWN — Anyone wanting to get rid of some personal hazardous waste can do it later this fall in Essex County.

The County Board of Supervisors has tentatively approved Essex County Hazardous Waste Day and set a budget of $15,000.

The County Department of Public Works will conduct the event, at a date to be set later, in which residents can take their hazardous waste to the county's main trash transfer station in Lewis and dispose of it for free.

"If they (residents) can't get rid of it, they're going to put it in a bag, throw it in a dumpster," County Manager Daniel Palmer said. "I think, ultimately, we do have some responsibility."

The county will apply to the State Department of Environmental Conservation for a matching funds grant for the event.
