Fort Covington man charged with arson

BOMBAY — A Fort Covington man has been charged with setting fire to a vacant house on Cold Springs Road last week.

Firefighters were called to Whitney McDermut's two-story house Aug. 24 after flames were spotted erupting from the back of the home, which had most recently been used for storage.

Officials said the fire appeared to have started in an addition on the residence and caused about $35,000 in damage.

Authorities deemed the blaze an arson and arrested Ricky L. Fuller this week for allegedly starting the fire.

Malone-based State Police said the 55-year-old is now facing a single charge of third-degree arson.

After being arraigned, Fuller was sent to Franklin County Jail on $25,000 bail, which he had not posted as of Wednesday night.

The investigation into the fire, as well as several other suspected arsons in the area, is continuing.

It was unclear whether police suspect Fuller in the other arsons, which also involved vacant buildings. The investigator handling the case could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Police did not reveal a motive for the alleged crime.
