Sheriff's Department concerned about scam
PLATTSBURGH — Clinton County Sheriff David N. Favro is warning the public that telephone solicitations asking for donations on behalf of the Clinton County Sheriff's Office are a scam.
The Sheriff's Office Enforcement Division received a report on Monday that an individual calling himself Ryan had contacted the same person by phone several times in the last week saying he was doing annual fundraising for the Clinton County Sheriff's Office and asking for a donation.
The Sheriff's Department never does phone solicitations.
The only solicitations on behalf of the Clinton County Sheriff's Office are done at the state level through the New York State Sheriff's Association's annual membership drive. That involves a letter sent asking people whether they want to become an honorary member of the association.
Favro warns people that if you are not familiar with the individual or organization seeking a donation, do not respond to their requests or give out any personal information.
Anyone who has received one of these calls or has any information about them is asked to call 565-4340.
Moriah to vote on school improvements
MORIAH — Voters here go to the polls today to decide the fate of almost $10 million in improvements to Moriah Central School.
The vote is from noon to 8 p.m. in the school lobby.
The work would have no local cost to taxpayers and would be 100-percent funded through state aid.
Superintendent William Larrow said the new project would replace the school roof and heating boilers, renovate the school swimming pool and reconnect the facility to the power grid. A cogeneration plant at the school generates electricity to run the facility, but there are times when it may be cheaper to buy power, he said.

NACS Board plans project forum
ELLENBURG — The Northern Adirondack Central School Board will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the Middle/High School auditorium.
There will be a public forum on the proposed EXCEL capital-improvement building project. There will be a question-and-answer period.
The meeting is open to the public, with community input encouraged.
Tickets offered for Adirondack Chair contest
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is again holding its Adirondack Chair contest.
People buy tickets and guess when the Adirondack Chair on Lake Flower's Pontiac Bay falls into the lake. The winner will get 50 percent of the funds raised.
Tickets are available to people 18 years and older and cost $2 each.
"People guess the day and time the chair will fall through the ice and who guesses the closest date and time without going over the time wins," Chamber Executive Director Sylvie Nelson said in a news release.
Tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce, Blue Line Sports, Borealis Color, Main Street Exchange, Mountain Gift & Powder Co., St. Regis Canoe and Waterhole.
"The money raised by this fundraising event is reinvested in the community through chamber events such as the Summer Concert Series, Great Adirondack Days, Hamner Guide Boat Races and so much more," Nelson said.
Last year, the chair dropped on April 3, and in 2008, it was on April 17.
