PLATTSBURGH — The summer bass tournament season starts Saturday with the the ABA Bassmaster Weekend Series.
More than 150 anglers will compete for a $6,000 prize in the one-day tournament, which is sponsored by Toyota. An additional $1,000 will be awarded to the angler who reels in the heaviest bass of the day.
ABA Weekend Fishing Series Tour Organizer Joe Angelone said it is a pleasure to hold the Bassmaster Weekend Series opener on Lake Champlain.
"As in the past, we are always excited about coming to Lake Champlain and Plattsburgh. It is such a beautiful location and such a welcoming community," he said in a press release. "There will be quite a challenge this year with the water levels being as high as they are, however, we'll take every precaution that the anglers are safe. We will also do our best to protect the waterfront property owners, as well. This looks to be a great event, and we sure hope to see everyone there."
Registration for the event, organized by Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, along with the City of Plattsburgh, will take place 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Naked Turtle in Plattsburgh. The weigh-in will be held at Dock Street Landing in Plattsburgh at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Earlier, local officials had worried about the fate of the several fishing derbies set for this year, for high water canceled the annual Rotary International Fishing Classic that was supposed to happen last weekend.
In mid May, when Rotary Club of Plattsburgh canceled that event, Lake Champlain was nearly 3 feet above flood level — organizers felt there was too much risk posed to boaters, with lots of debris in the lake and many unfamiliar obstacles covered by the flood.
Wednesday, the lake measured 101.42 feet above sea level at Rouses Point, according to the National Weather Service. That's the high end for moderate flooding; flood stage is 100 feet.
