BANGOR — A Malone man was accidentally shot in the left shoulder by his younger brother when the two were hunting in the Town of Bangor.
Wayne R. Watson, 52, was struck by a 50-caliber round fired by his brother, Douglas Watson, 47, of Constable.
No criminal charges have been filed, but Malone-based State Police are continuing the investigation.
Police said that on Saturday, — the first day of muzzle-loader season — the two were on land they jointly own off Fay-Brushton Road, also known as Franklin County Road 8. At about 11:10 a.m., Douglas was in a ground blind, when, he told police, he saw two deer and fired a round.
But the projectile struck Wayne, who had moved from his hunting spot and was walking on an all-terrain-vehicle trail.
Douglas drove his injured brother out of the woods to get help, called 911.
State Police as well as New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officers responded to the emergency call.
They were met by volunteers from the Bangor Fire and Rescue Department, who transported Wayne to Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone for treatment.
He underwent surgery for removal of the round and remained in the hospital on Monday.
When reached via telephone in his hospital bed, Wayne said, "I'm all right, but I'd rather not make any comment."
He said he was not sure when he would be released.
