LAKE PLACID — The Adirondack Scenic Railroad will reach an impressive milestone in 2010.
The railroad will carry its 1 millionth passenger sometime this year.
The railroad began as a four-mile tourist train in Thendara. It now runs three train sets on a seasonal basis on more than 70 miles of track, including between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.
Only tickets sold online, at adirondackrail.com, will be counted toward the total, in order to ensure the accuracy of the time and number of the tickets purchased.
The railroad, which is run by professional staff and volunteers, has been in operation since 1994.
Since its opening, the railroad has averaged more than 50,000 passengers per season.
It maintains stations in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Utica and Thendara.
The New York State Department of Transportation works with the railroad to maintain the corridor. Summer weed control and brush cutting keep the trail open for use during the winter.
Major repairs to culverts and beaver control are also performed during the nicer weather but benefit the year-round users of the corridor.
The state owns the corridor and continues to do its part to preserve it.
The trains are owned and operated by the Adirondack Railway Preservation Society, a nonprofit corporation.
