State Police investigating fire

BLOOMINGDALE — Criminal investigators are probing the cause of a Sunday-night vehicle fire that damaged a garage in Bloomingdale.

Bloomingdale volunteer firefighters responded at about 7:30 p.m. to the intersection of Main and Vine streets. A van had reportedly caught fire, which spread to an adjacent garage, causing damage.

No injuries were reported.

Bloomingdale Fire Chief Jason Cogan referred most questions to State Police.

All three trucks from Bloomingdale and about 20 volunteers extinguished the fire. The van was reportedly scorched beyond recognition, though firefighters saved the garage, which suffered only exterior damage.

“The Fire Department did a phenomenal job because the fire had gotten into the garage, and they made a spectacular save,” fire investigator Tom Tucker said Monday.

Franklin County investigators sifted through the wreckage Sunday night, as Essex County investigators were unavailable due to inclement weather.

State Police Investigator Dan Howard in Ray Brook said he’s awaiting a formal report from the Franklin County Cause and Origin Team.

County fire investigators have established a cause but deferred to State Police, who are investigating the blaze, Tucker said.

Two trucks and 10 members from Saranac Lake stood by at the Bloomingdale Fire Station. Firefighters were back at their stations by about midnight.
