Sex offender jailed on pill charge

PLATTSBURGH — A high-risk sex offender is once again behind bars, this time for allegedly trying to con extra painkillers from a local pharmacy.

Plattsburgh-based State Police arrested Carrie B. Provost earlier this week after she allegedly went to a Kinney Drugs pharmacy and tried to get extra medications by using an altered prescription.

Investigators said the 29-year-old was trying to get more than three times the amount of medication she had originally been prescribed.

She was taken into custody Monday afternoon after troopers were notified about the alleged fraud and is now facing a felony charge of second-degree forgery.

Provost is considered a Level 3 high-risk offender based on her felony conviction about eight years ago for rape of a 13-year-old boy.

She served jail and probation time for that crime but was arrested again earlier this year after she allegedly moved from her Keeseville residence without notifying law-enforcement officials, which is a New York State Sex Offender Registry requirement.

Provost, who was found to be living in West Chazy, was charged on a warrant out of Essex County with failing to report a change of address.

It was unclear Wednesday whether that felony case is still pending. Essex County Court clerks said they had no record of that case being moved to the higher court. A message left with the Essex County District Attorney’s Office was not returned.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Provost was still being held at Clinton County Jail on $1,500 cash bail.

She will reappear in court at a later date to face the charge.
