PLATTSBURGH -- The 2008 road-construction season is under way.
Fines are doubled for speeding in work zones. Drivers are asked to use caution in work zones to protect the occupants of cars and the highway workers.
Here's a look at some of the major road work being done around the North Country:
CLINTON COUNTY
Silver Lake Road Bridge, Saranac: Construction has begun for the rehabilitation of the bridge adjacent to Route 3. One-lane traffic will be maintained throughout construction. Completion is Nov. 1.
Route 22, Plattsburgh and Beekmantown: A major reconstruction project is taking place between Route 374 and the Haynes Road intersection. Any disruptions in traffic will be controlled by flaggers and signs. Minor delays. Completion is November.
Interstate 87, Chazy and Champlain: Resurfacing project, including some guardrail replacement, is taking place between exits 41 and 42. There may be daily lane closures, with minor delays during working hours. Completion is November.
Interstate 87, AuSable to Plattsburgh: Mowing of rights-of-way, cutting trees and other maintenance work from exit 34 to 36. Minor delays.
Route 374, Dannemora: Drainage improvements from the village to Garden Way (road). Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times and will be controlled by flaggers. Expect delays.
Route 11, Altona and Ellenburg and Mooers to the county line: Pavement repairs and other construction activities will be taking place from Candlelight Road to Bombard Road. Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times and will be controlled by flaggers and pilot vehicles. Use alternate routes when possible. Expect delays.
Route 442, Peru: Mowing and maintenance activities being done between routes 9 and 225. Minor delays.
Route 11, Village of Rouses Point: Paving taking place within the village. Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times and will be controlled by flaggers. Use alternate routes when possible.
Route 9B, Champlain: Mowing and maintenance activities being done between routes 276 and 11. Minor delays.
Route 3, Cadyville to county line: Mowing taking place. One-lane traffic at times will be controlled by flaggers.
Route 9N, AuSable: Drainage improvements will be going on between Clintonville and I-87. Delays during working hours.
Route 374 Village of Dannemora to Lyon Mountain: Cleaning of drainage basins is under way. Traffic, controlled by flaggers, will be reduced to one lane at times. Allow for delays.
Route 22, Chazy and Mooers: Paving will be done from West Chazy to Route 11. Traffic will be reduced to one lane and will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot vehicle. Use alternate routes when possible. Completion is mid-October.
Route 22, Peru to Plattsburgh: Mowing of rights-of-ways being done. Some delays during working hours.

U.S. Oval: Drainage improvements, including water mains, catch basins, manholes, street reconstruction and curbs, is under way. A temporary detour is being used through the parking lot. The City Gym will remain accessible through the side entrance. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Through traffic is encouraged to use alternate routes. Completion is Oct. 24.
ESSEX COUNTY
Sunset Drive, Willsboro: Closed, due to road collapse. Crews are working on culverts and shoulders.
Stowersville Road, Lewis: Lane shift near Wardner Bridge, due to slope failure, until repairs can be made.
Boreas Blue Ridge Road, North Hudson: Ditching taking place. Some delays.
River Road, Bloomingdale: Reconstruction is being done. One-lane traffic will be maintained. Expect delays.
Route 9N, Crown Point and Port Henry: Construction on Route 9N over Putnam Creek and McKenzie Brook construction continues. There is one-way alternating traffic at both locations 24 hours a day.
Route 9N, Westport: Drainage work being done south of Westport to the Moriah town line. Some delays.
Route 86, Saranac Lake: Paving is complete from the railroad tracks to River Street. Work, such as driveways, is being done. Some delays.
FRANKLIN COUNTY
County Route 25, Malone: Pre-construction activities taking place. Some delays.
Brand Road Bridge, Malone: Bridge closed for construction work. Tentative completion date: November.
Route 37, Malone: Paving complete, but work such as shoulder backup and driveway paving is taking place. Minimal delays.
Route 11, Clinton County line to Chateaugay: Paving is being done. Traffic will be one lane and will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot vehicle. Expect delays.
