Suspected mold forces temporary closure of Mooers school

MOOERS -- Mold appears to be the culprit that closed Mooers Elementary School on Tuesday.

On Monday, a substance that appeared to be mold was found on a carpet in the school's Matthew's wing.

Northeastern Clinton Central School Superintendent Peter Turner decided to close the building Tuesday, with the rest of the district in session.

Three classrooms are possibly affected by the problem, though all five in the wing will be relocated, Turner said in a statement.

"St. Joseph's Parish is allowing the use of their building, which is located next door and will host the first-grade classes," he said.

"The kindergarten classes will be relocated within the building to keep our youngest students in a familiar setting. The district is working on the logistics of teaching from this satellite location."

Officials relocated furniture and removed carpets to assess the situation. Once the issue is resolved, the carpet will be replaced.

"Students will return to their (usual) classrooms once the matter has been handled," Turner said.

Mooers Elementary children will attend school today, with three classes being held at St. Joseph's.
