Don’t state as a fact something that is unsubstantiated or that our editors wouldn't know to be true.

Don’t presume someone’s guilt in a case when it hasn't been established by a court.

Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

Lookback: Aug. 25, 2008

25 YEARS AGO -- 1983

Telephone workers locally and nationwide end their 22-day strike, which had disrupted some service to consumers.

It appears that Plattsburgh Foundry and Machine Co. and the City of Plattsburgh have reached a compromise on the proposed city zoning ordinance. The agreement could benefit the foundry in future development.

St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Saranac Lake is refused a federal loan for the construction of a $1 million-plus apartment building for older adults. But the Rev. Philip Snyder said the project will not be abandoned.

Because rental at the Church Street offices in Elizabethtown will increase in January, Essex County supervisors are eyeing the Whallonsburg Home as a possible office complex.

50 YEARS AGO -- 1958

The Common Council agrees to a 10-percent pay raise for rank-and-file city employees. Councilmen are still at odds over raises for upper-echelon employees.

A 5-percent general wage increase is granted for local employees of Diamond Gardner Corp. in Plattsburgh. The increase will affect about 275 men and women.

Traffic is halted on part of Tom Miller Road during Northway bypass dynamiting. That area is the only part of the bypass from Rugar Street to Cumberland Head Corners where blasting will have to be used.

Clinton County is appealing to Gov. Averill Harriman for more state troopers to patrol North Country roads to cut down on traffic deaths. So far this year, 16 people have died on county highways. In all of 1957, 19 deaths occurred.

75 YEARS AGO -- 1933

The J&J Rogers Co. at AuSable Forks will employ at least 50 more men at their plant. The increase, which is in accordance with the National Re-employment Amendment code, will bring the total number of employees to more than 300.

The entire business section of the Village of Dannemora is threatened by fire when flames destroy the general store of Jacob Tolosky and three apartments on the second floor. Damage is estimated at $25,000.

Rescued from a narrow ledge on which they had been stranded for two days, three Plattsburgh Boy Scouts are brought down through a wild Adirondack trail from the great cliff of Wallface Mountain. They are Robert Glenn, 17; Tyler Grey, 19; and William LaDue, 21.

Gov. Herbert H. Lehman signs a bill declaring a moratorium against mortgage foreclosures against all real property in New York state until July 1, 1934, provided taxes and interest have been paid.

100 YEARS AGO -- 1908

Summer visitors are leaving the mountains and other resorts in swarms just now. The cause of the extraordinary exodus this early is said to be the very cool weather of the past two weeks.

The Town of Dannemora is seeking bids for the construction of a new town hall in the Village of Dannemora. It will be built of concrete blocks.

A barn at the rear of James Conway's residence on Sailly Avenue was discovered to be on fire by the crew of a Delaware and Hudson engine. Despite efforts of the Fire Department, the barn, filled with hay, is destroyed.

The Plattsburgh Board of Public Works recommends that a fire-alarm box be placed at the Lozier works. This should be done and at once.
