Legislator wants gas prices investigated

TUPPER LAKE — A Franklin County legislator is urging the Attorney General's Office to investigate discrepancies in gasoline prices between Tupper Lake and the Redford/Plattsburgh area.

Legislator Paul A. Maroun (R-Tupper Lake, Santa Clara) said the gas is sometimes 23 cents per gallon cheaper in the Plattsburgh area.

"I travel these roads constantly, and three different name-brand gasolines in the Redford/Plattsburgh area have been ... selling for $4.08 a gallon," he said in a recent news release. "The same name-brand gasolines in my town and the surrounding area have been selling as high as $4.30 per gallon.

"Something is wrong, and I want the attorney general to find out for all of us why we have to pay more."

He noted the gas stations, in some cases, are only 38 miles from each other.

"The old response that transportation is the reason will no longer satisfy myself or the people of this area. Twenty cents and over a gallon is just unreasonable."

In his letter to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Maroun detailed the price differential and said he is looking for "the long arm of your powerful office to look into the above discrepancy and have either the distributor or wholesaler explain to the people of northern New York the reason for the difference."

Maroun had not heard back from Cuomo as of Wednesday.
