Westport slammed by storm

WESTPORT -- The thunderstorm that rocked Chazy Friday afternoon also did extensive damage to Westport in Essex County.

The storm came through at about 3 p.m. with winds up to 60 miles per hour, taking down trees and damaging property throughout Westport.

One lane of Route 9N/22 was closed for an hour while the Westport Fire Department and Town Public Works Department removed trees and debris.

Power was also knocked out on many streets and National Grid had several repair crews in the area.

A tent-lawn sale at the Main Street home of Thomas "Capt. Tom" Lonergan was damaged by the storm when the canopy collapsed on the tables of merchandise.

Large trees came down in Ballard Park and the Library Lawn Park in downtown Westport.
