MALONE — Applications have been reviewed, and interviews are being scheduled to find a new clerk for the Village of Malone.

"We're still in limbo," said Mayor Brent Stewart as far as hiring a replacement for Tammy LaValley, who resigned in late May citing medical and personal reasons.

Deputy Village Clerk Karen Elmer-Pritchard has been covering the clerking duties since the vacancy occurred.

He said trustees Susan Hafter and Lenora Richards were named members of the search committee to find someone else and have received about 16 applicants to study.

They are narrowing the candidates down, "and interviews have begun," the mayor said.

Neither Richards nor Hafter were available for comment.

But Stewart hopes to have a recommendation from the committee by the next meeting of the Village Board July 13.

"Being a mayor's appointment, the board won't really vote on it," he said.

It may be a challenge to find someone to take over the diverse responsibilities of a village clerk, which include being responsible for all of the paperwork generated by the village, signing off on the work of the office's two other staff clerks and answering inquiries from the public.

In addition, the clerk handles all related insurance issues, requests for birth and death records and is the secretary to the Village Board, keeping its minutes and recording its actions.

"This is the kind of job you learn on the job," Stewart said, adding that the deputy clerk will work along with the new hire to get the person familiar with the duties and operation of the office.
