Altona wind project moving forward

ALTONA -- Altona Wind Park construction has begun, and crews are working to finish the access roads and substation.

Altona Town Supervisor Larry Ross said 80 percent of the roads are complete and that Noble Environmental Power plans to have them finished by the end of June.

"Everything's going fine. They're working long, hard hours on the roads," Ross said.

The time line for the rest of the project includes:

The substation on Military Turnpike in Altona, which is slated for completion by Aug. 8.

Foundations, scheduled to be finished by Aug. 18.

Commissioning for New York State Power Authority, expected by the end of September.

Turbines, expected to start going up by June 16 and to be completed by Sept. 10.

The first turbine online by Sept. 28.

A ground-breaking ceremony will be held Tuesday, June 17, at Feinberg Park in Altona, and the supervisor said Noble expects all of the planned 65 turbines will be online by Oct. 29.

Ross said he'll be happy when the wind mills are up and running and said residents seem to be excited about the project -- and the tax breaks, as well.

"We haven't had any problems here in Altona."

Construction had been stalled for months because wind-park investors wanted more wind data for the project.

"We were delayed because of funding, but it's all set now," Ross said. "They're pretty much on the move."

Noble representatives declined to comment on the project.
