Good news at Biz Expo

'The phones are ringing, which is a good sign …'

PLATTSBURGH — At the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce, some exhibitors were delivering good news on business in a struggling economy.

David Bray, property manager at Imperial Industrial Park in Plattsburgh, said three tenants have moved in during the past couple of months.

"The phones are ringing, which is a good sign compared to the way it was last fall," he said.

NEW COMPANIES
One of those is Cintube. The Canada-based company is initially leasing 12,000 square feet, with an option for up to 40,000 square feet.

"They have a lot of expectations for continued growth," Bray said.

He said the company was brought in through the efforts of Mark Barie, founder of CrossBorder Development Corp.

Cintube specializes in tube bending and is a supplier for the new Nova Bus plant in the Town of Plattsburgh. They will produce special tubes, such as those for gas lines and water-supply lines.

Lemieux Industries is another Canadian company that has opened a Plattsburgh location. It is focused on fabrication of stainless-steel products for original equipment manufacturers.

The Plattsburgh location was opened to support Bombardier Transportation.

Hanet Plastics, which makes plastic trays for the food industry, has also moved in. It is yet another company based in Canada that is breaking into the U.S. market.

STEADY BUSINESS
In another booth at the Biz Expo, Carrieann Rollier, manager of Nelson's Flower Shop in Plattsburgh, said flowers never go out of demand.

"Business has been blooming."

Her parents, Deborah and Dennis Rollier, bought the business 3½ years ago, but Nelson's has been around for 74 years.

In addition to flowers, Nelson's offers plants, silk arrangements, hand-crafted jewelry, tapestries, fruit and gift baskets and candy.

The store delivers to about a 45-mile radius.

Three generations are involved, as Deborah's mother, Shirley Curry, also helps out.

"We are trying to keep that family theme," Mr. Rollier said.

SEASON STARTING
Jason Smith, manager of Adirondack Lakes and Trails Outfitters in Saranac Lake, said it's still too early in the season to tell how business will be.

"We'll see this summer how it (the economy) affects us. Our season's just getting started right now."

In addition to canoe and kayak sales, the business offers rentals; outfitting services; guided half-day, full-day and overnight tours; instruction and repairs.

There's a possibility business will even improve this year, if more people stay closer to home to take a vacation, Smith said, and paddle sports are certainly less expensive than motorboats.

Owner Steve Doxzan noted that once you buy the canoe or kayak, it doesn't cost any more money to go enjoy it all summer.

"We are getting into vacation time. It will start to get busy again."

FULL HOUSE
Chamber Executive Vice President Jody Parks said 186 exhibitors were at the show this year. That number represents a full house and has been unchanged for several years.

The first hour saw 325 visitors, and a steady stream continued throughout the day.

Parks was pleased with the turnout, especially given the state of the economy.

"Honestly, I was a little worried about it at the beginning of the year because of all the negative publicity about the economy."
