Dairy cows die in barn fire

WESTPORT — Fourteen cows died in an early morning fire at a Westport dairy farm.

A barn at the Windy Valley Farm owned by Ralph Evens caught fire at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday, Essex County fire officials said.

Four milk cows were successfully rescued from the barn; the rest of the herd was in pasture at the time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Essex County Fire Investigation Unit.

Westport firefighters got mutual aid from Moriah, Port Henry, Wadhams, Whallonsburg and other area fire departments.
