New wireless Internet and security system at Treadwell Bay Marina and Resort
Treadwell Bay Marina is located at 214 Bouchard Drive. It is about 2 miles north of the City of Plattsburgh on Route 9. More information is available at www.treadwellbaymarina.com or by calling 563-1321.
PLATTSBURGH — Wireless Internet, security and data transmission is now available at Treadwell Bay Marina and Resort.
Wells Communications used a Firetide wireless mesh network to cover the about 150-acre property. Wells Communications Communications Specialist Maureen Carlo said Treadwell Bay's management originally only planned to provide its guests with wireless Internet. Once they learned about Firetide's capabilities, they decided to add video surveillance and wireless data transmission between the various operating units of the marina.
Marina co-owner and manager Gary Titherington said they had tried to offer wireless Internet through another system. It didn't work well because of the size of the area to be served, interference from masts and other factors.
"We knew there had to be some better technology out there. Maureen keeps us up to speed on this product," he said.
The system uses five Firetide wireless mesh nodes to cover the property.
"Firetide is a unique product," Carlo said. "It can handle wireless access points and network video cameras and still allows the network to be robust enough to operate and transmit quality video."
Wireless video surveillance is provided through 13 Panasonic IP cameras set up around the marina and grounds.
The video is recorded and stored on a server using OnSSI video management software. It is accessible from any authorized workstation or portable device within the wireless network, but also over the Internet.
"It allows you to grab video from anywhere you have access to high-speed Internet. Gary can use his phone to see what's happening in Plattsburgh," Carlo said.
Carlo said Adam Williams, a manufacturer's representative for Panasonic and OnSSI, was instrumental in getting the project off the ground and showing the marina ownership the benefits of an Internet Protocol video solution.
Titherington said the marina's Davis Weather Station updates conditions every 10 minutes. Bud Durland, an IT Specialist who works for Titherington, said that's a very valuable service because more than 90 percent of the marina's members are from Canada.
"They can see whether it's worth the trip down to the marina," he said.
The Titherington family — Geoffrey Titerington, his two sons, Jeff and Gary, and their sister, Diane McCarty, bought the former Marina Champlain and surrounding land in 2002. Since that time, they have invested more than $900,000 in the business and have seen the membership grow from 122 to more than 300.
The 330 slips at the marina include some that can handle boats up to 55 feet in length.
A new service center built in 2006 allows them to drive the 50-ton Travelift travel lift and the boat it holds right inside for service or winterization. A full range of maritime services and repairs are available.
The ship store and gas dock are open seven days a week in summer, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
Transient boaters are always welcome and can dock for free to dine at the restaurant. There is a heated swimming pool and pool house, along with a boater's lounge that features a computer for the guests.
Laundry and shower facilities are available. Slips include cable television, electric and water hook-ups.
The property also has a number of nature trails and picnic areas.
Treadwell Bay Marina employs seven people full-time through the winter and up to 18 during the peak summer season.
It is a very secure marina, enclosed by land except for a narrow entry to the lake.
"That's a big selling point for the boaters who come down and just stay on their boat. There are very few waves within the basin," Titherington said.
His assistant, Kierstin Sheehan, said the marina offers its members and guests a courtesy car. That allows them to make short trips into the town and city.
The video cameras are only part of the security measures in place. There is a security gate at the entrance and restrooms have code locks.
Titherington said his family and employees have tried to create a very comfortable family focus.
"Our goal is to be the premier marina on Lake Champlain. We continue to meet and exceed our guests expectations," he said.
