Mayor's Cup and July Fourth events announced
PLATTSBURGH — Plans are taking shape for the Fourth of July and the 32nd Mayor's Cup festivities in the City of Plattsburgh.
Sunrise Rotary Mayor's Cup Committee co-chair Dr. Jake DeSnyder opened the press conference to announce this year's events.
"On behalf of the Sunrise Rotary and the City of Plattsburgh I would like to welcome you to the opening event of Mayor's Cup 2009," he said.
DeSnyder said the Mayor's Cup events scheduled for July 9 through 12 also include the city's July Fourth celebration.
parades, fireworks
Plattsburgh Mayor Donald Kasprzak said the city will have a parade Saturday, July 4, that will feature a theme tied to this year's Lake Champlain Quadricentennial events. That will be followed by fireworks at the city beach, he said, with entertainment at that venue to be announced.
DeSnyder said the third-annual Sunrise Rotary Parade of Lights Competition is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, July 9. They are hoping to get at least 40 boats for a moonlight parade from Wilcox Dock to the Naked Turtle at the Plattsburgh Boat Basin, with prizes for best decorations.
SPLASH PARTY
Gail Recore, another co-chair of the Sunshine Rotary's Mayor's Cup Committee, said last year's Sunrise Rotary Splash Party cruise has become a landlubbers event at the Naked Turtle on Friday, July 10.
"It allows us to have more people be part of that," she said.
Entertainment will be provided by Mango Jam, a zydeco band. The evening will include a waterfront fireworks display put on by the city.
MAYOR'S CUP REGATTA
On Saturday, July 11, the Sunrise Rotary puts on the Mayor's Cup Regatta, the celebration's feature event. DeSnyder said it's the largest freshwater sailing event in New England, with 80 to 100 boats from the United States and Canada.
Sunrise Rotary Mayor's Cup Committee co-chair Dr. Kjell Dahlen said it remains the biggest sailing event on Lake Champlain, not only based on the number of boats but on the quality of the sailing. There are prizes in three racing divisions and 11 sailing classes.
The event is followed by a barbecue and party at the Naked Turtle.
RECREATIONAL EVENTS
The Kayak Shack plans to hold a competitive or recreational paddle around Valcour Island earlier that day, while CVPH Wellness Center will host a 5K walk/run. The city plans to have entertainment at the Kiwanis band shell at Macdonough Monument Park that evening, with details coming later.
The final weigh-in of the Wal-mart FLW Tour event will take place at the Plattsburgh State University Field House that night.
The Mayor's Cup winds up with a new route for the Mountain to Lake Bike Race. It will feature 54- and 68-mile bike rides that start and finish at CVPH Medical Center, with a barbecue afterward.
Walking tours of Macdonough Monument will be available July 10 through 12.
MORE EVENTS PLANNED
City of Plattsburgh Quadricentennial Committee Chairwoman Jennifer La Fontaine said the parade is only one of the Quadricentennial-themed events planned in the city this year. The full list at present is available at www.discoverlakechamplain400.org.
DeSnyder said while the Sunrise Rotary makes money on the Mayor's Cup every year, this year it plans to donate a good portion of that money to the city's waterfront park, where Thursday's press conference took place.
Kasprzak said he appreciates the partnership with Sunrise Rotary.
He said the fact that the group is giving back to the park is a great legacy project.
More events and details will be listed on www.mayorscup.com.
