PLATTSBURGH — Malone teen Nate Marshall McGee made the cut — he has taken a spot among the 36 finalists on "American Idol."
McGee, 19, won the chance to go on in a sudden-death "sing-off" with another contestant on Wednesday night's episode. The two awaited their turns in front of the judges nervously.
"I want this so bad, but I don't want to take away your dream," McGee told the other singer, Jackie Midkiff of Marysville, Tenn.
The Malone vocalist struggled growing up, the show revealed, as his mother was in jail, and he was raised by his grandmother and other relatives.
"People have to understand how hard this is," he told Midkiff and show host Ryan Seacrest as the minutes ticked by before his last chance to continue on.
Judge Simon Cowel threw a curve at McGee as the teen prepared to sing his first note, asking him in an incredulous tone, "What are you wearing?"
McGee appeared in skintight red pants and a white T-shirt that fit snuggly. Three narrow hair bands adorned his spiky blond hair.
Since this might be his last "Idol" appearance, McGee told Cowel, he chose to be true to himself with his wardrobe selection.
"Kind of like the new Bon Jovi," he said, winning a chuckle from the typically acrimonious judge.
McGee sang "I'm Already There," dissolving into tears as he finished. He leaped in the air and cried again when the judges told him he won the "sing-off."
"I feel sorry for the people who are around you, in general. Drama! Drama! Drama! Drama! Drama!," a girl named Frances said in a message to McGee posted Thursday at american-idol-up-dates.com. "But as soon as you are asked to sing, WOW! Totally confident and talented while singing! Try to be that guy all the time!!!! PLEASE!"
From this point on, viewers will choose who stays and who leaves the show, voting via toll-free phone numbers or texting with cell phones.
Live performance episodes are scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesdays on FOX, with results shows the following night, also at 8 p.m.
