CLINTON — Three people were killed in a one-car accident on Route 11 in the Town of Clinton Sunday afternoon.
Chazy-based State Police reported three fatalities in an accident that happened at about 3:15 p.m. Troopers and rescue personnel remained at the accident site Sunday evening.
Clinton County Emergency Services reported two people died at the accident site, and one person died during transport to CVPH Medical Center.
Churubusco Fire Chief Mike Perreault said the accident happened about one mile east of Brandy Brook Road.
"It was horrific," he said, adding that all five people in the car were ejected.
At 9:46 p.m., State Police reported they were in the process of notifying the victim's families and obtaining updates on the condition of two other people injured in the crash. It was not known when the names of the victims or additional information would be released.
Personnel from the Churubusco, Ellenburg Center and Ellenburg Depot fire departments responded, as did ambulance crews from Morrisonville and CVPH. Clinton County Coroner David F. Donah and an EMS coordinator also went to the accident.
Route 11 was closed in both directions between Brandy Brook Road and Military Turnpike in the towns of Ellenburg and Clinton. The road reopened at about 8:30 p.m.
Churubusco firefighters and rescue personnel were back in service at 8:30 p.m.
A debriefing for all those who responded to the accident is scheduled for this evening at the Churubusco Fire Department.
