Rally today to support Lyon Mountain Correctional

By ANDREA VanVALKENBURG

LYON MOUNTAIN — Dannemora Town Supervisor Americo "Ves" Pivetta is pleading for community support for a rally today at Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility.

He hopes residents, elected officials and business representatives from across the tri-county area will show up at the 3:30 p.m. rally at American Legion Post 1623 in Lyon Mountain to drum up support against the facility's proposed closure.

Earlier this month, Gov. David Paterson pledged to close four more prisons, including Lyon Mountain Correctional and Moriah Shock Incarceration Facility.

News of the latest round of possible closures left many residents fearing it will have a devastating impact on local employment and the tax base.

"This affects everyone, and I really need the support," Pivetta said Thursday afternoon while preparing for the rally.

"And we really need business representatives there from the different counties. I'm asking for everyone's support."

For more information about the rally, contact Pivetta at 492-7541, Ext. 103.
