Beekmantown man faces felony sexual-abuse charges

BEEKMANTOWN — A Beekmantown man faces felony charges for the alleged sexual abuse of a person who could not give consent.

State Police said Leonard Cormier, 72, of Cooper Drive inappropriately touched the alleged victim during incidents that occurred July 9.

He was arrested July 11 and charged with third-degree aggravated criminal sexual act and second-degree criminal sexual act, both felonies.

Cormier, who was released on $5,000 bail, also faces a misdemeanor charge for endangering the welfare of an incompetent person or physically disabled person.

He is scheduled to appear in Beekmantown Town Court at 5 p.m. today before Justice Susan Castine.

Clinton County Assistant District Attorney Domenica Padula said her office could not comment on whether the case would go to a grand jury because these types of cases are kept secret by statute.

“I can tell you that action in this case is still pending,” she said.

Padula added that if an indictment is handed down, the case will become public record.

The name of the alleged victim would not be released.

Shayla Taylor was so far along in labor that her nurses at Moore Medical Center decided not to move her when Monday's tornado hit. They waited out the storm in an operating room, where the wall disappeared as the tornado hit the building.
