Storm brings freezing rain, snow

Few injuries reported as numerous vehicles slide off slick roadways

MALONE — Most drivers seemed to be proceeding carefully as a predicted winter storm moved through the North Country on Thursday.

Dispatchers in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties were kept busy sending volunteer firefighters and rescue personnel to a number of incidents where vehicles slipped off the road, but few injuries were reported.

Many events scheduled to be held Thursday were canceled.

SLICK ROADS

Getting to the site of accidents became an issue in places like Bangor, where a steady rain and temperatures just under the freezing mark kept the highways slick.

Several pleas went out over police scanners for the State Department of Transportation or Franklin County Highway Department crews to bring sanders to Bangor and Route 11 near Gallop Road, Bangor Road and Bacon Road and for Stacy Road in Burke.

But crews were already tied up trying to keep the main roadways passable for the drivers who braved the weather.

Bangor had to seek back-up help from Malone Callfiremen because they were responding to so many calls.

Ambulances were sent out to Burke and Fort Covington, where at least two people fell on the accumulating ice; one may have broken an ankle.

Two people apparently complaining of back pain were taken to Alice Hyde Medical Center following a crash about 12:25 p.m. on Route 37 outside Malone between Bare Hill Road and County Road 8.

A car slid into an Amerigas propane truck on Low Road in Whippleville, but it was only a property-damage crash, and a car was reported off the road on Route 458 in Santa Clara.

Dispatchers in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties said most of the accidents reported were property damage only.

CANCELATIONS

Malone Central School and Salmon River Central closed for the day Thursday because of the weather.

Peru and Saranac schools canceled all after-school activity on Thursday, and many organizations that had meetings scheduled called those off.

A public meeting of the North Country Regional Council, scheduled for early this morning in Lake Placid, to present a summary of its Strategic Plan will not be held.

Westport School Board moved the meeting scheduled for Thursday night to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School Board meeting that was to take place Thursday night will now be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

OUTLOOK

The mixed weather is expected to continue into this morning, followed by clear but cold weather this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
