North Country Olympians expected at today's parade
in Saranac Lake
SARANAC LAKE — A parade will be held in downtown Saranac Lake today for local Olympians, hosted by the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Women's Civic Chamber.
The parade will start at 4 p.m. at the corner of Olive Street and Broadway and make its way to the Town of Harrietstown Town Hall.
"We are so proud of having these amazing athletes who represented us so well at the Vancouver Olympics that it was natural for us to help recognize their efforts and accomplishments," Liz Murray, vice president of the Women's Civic Chamber, said in a news release.
The athletes scheduled to participate in the parade include: Ashley Caldwell, 16, of Lake Placid, the youngest athlete from this region to participate in the games. She competed in the free-style aerials competition.
Bill Demong of Vermontville, two-time Olympic medalist (silver and gold) in Nordic combined and U.S. team flag bearer during the closing ceremonies. His gold medal is the United States' first in Nordic combined.
Peter Frenette, 17, of Saranac Lake, a first-time Olympian in Vancouver who competed in the 90- and 120-meter ski-jump competitions.
Mark Grimmette of Lake Placid, a five-time Olympian and two-time Olympic medalist (bronze in 1998 and silver in 2002) in doubles luge. He was also the U.S. team flag bearer during opening ceremonies in Vancouver.
Haley Johnson of Lake Placid, a first-time Olympian who raced in the women's biathlon competitions.
Chris Mazdzer of Saranac Lake, a first-time Olympian in men's singles luge.
Organizers also hope to have Tim Burke, Emily Sweeney, John Napier and Lowell Bailey at the event. Megan Sweeney is out of town and will not be able to attend.
"It is amazing to know that so many world-class athletes call the Adirondacks their home," Sylvie Nelson, executive director of the chamber, said in a statement.
"As a community, they are our heroes and inspiration, so we encourage everyone to attend the parade and show their support."
At the conclusion of the parade, the athletes will meet community members at the Town Hall Auditorium for a short period.
The Women's Civic Chamber will distribute flags along the parade route, courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce, and will have refreshments for everyone in the auditorium.
