SARANAC LAKE — A Saranac Lake restaurant that has been closed since mid-December plans to reopen Saturday.
Asian Buffet Hibachi and Sushi owner Linda Zheng said the sprinkler system broke the afternoon of Dec. 19, 2011, and the restaurant suffered extensive water damage before the water could be turned off.
Zheng said they have been getting a lot of phone calls asking when the restaurant would reopen, and everyone is excited to finally have a date.
"We've been missing our customers," she said.
Contractors and employees have been working on renovations. Zheng said they had to replace or repair flooring, carpets, walls, ceilings and equipment — almost everything in the building.
The restaurant looks much as it did before the damage, she said.
They plan to offer some new dishes in addition to the ones previously on the large menu. Those include cheese and herb biscuits, herb-roasted potatoes, curried chicken, Caribbean rice and beans, Mexican chicken and mushrooms, Philippine bananas, Indonesian bananas and chicken-cheese empanadas.
"That (last) one is very delicious," Zheng said.
'SUBSTANTIAL INVESTMENT'
The Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the restaurant, located at 542 Lake Flower Ave., at 10 a.m. Saturday.
"Linda and her family have made a substantial investment in our community by taking an old metal building and transforming it into a great family-friendly dining facility," Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sylvie Nelson said in a press release. "We were all saddened to hear about their troubles, but now we urge the community to support them as they reopen on Saturday.
"If you plan on eating out in the next few weeks, please remember the Asian Buffet."
