Cookbook Contest returns for second year

PLATTSBURGH — The Press-Republican is calling all area cooks to submit their favorite recipes to the annual Recipe Contest.

Participants will have a chance to win cash and gift certificates and have their recipe published in the Press-Republican's keepsake Recipe Contest Cookbook.

New this year to the contest are crockpot recipes.

Individuals may enter one recipe in up to three of six categories: Appetizers, Soups/Salads/Sides, Main Dishes, Crockpot Recipes, Under 18 and Desserts.

A panel of local judges will evaluate all entries and select seven finalists in each category to be published in the Recipe Contest Cookbook, which will appear inside the Press-Republican on March 27.

A gift certificate valued at $100 will be awarded to the entrant with the best recipe in each category, and a grand prize of $300 cash will go to the entrant with the best overall recipe.

Last year, the grand prize was won by a group of three area students who submitted a recipe for Adirondack Energy Bars to the Under 18 category.

All recipes will be judged based on taste/appeal (33 percent), nutritional value (33 percent) and ease of preparation (33 percent) by reading judges at the beginning of March.

Although not required, you may submit a digital photo to assist the judges in understanding your presentation. Send one digital photo of your presentation attached to your recipe submission. Each recipe must serve at least four adults.

The 42 recipes — about seven in each category — with the highest overall scores will be declared potential finalists.

Finalists' recipes will be published in the Press-Republican Recipe Contest 2012 Cookbook.

The official contest rules and entry form can be downloaded at pressrepub lican.com or obtained in person at the Press-Republican main office, 170 Margaret St., Plattsburgh.

Recipes may be dropped off in person or mailed to: Cookbook Contest, c/o Press-Republican, P.O. Box 459, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.

All entries must be received by no later than 5 p.m. March 2.
