Local baby found in Tennessee

JAY — The baby taken from a foster care home in Jay by her birth parents has been found unharmed in Tennessee.

State Police said 5-month-old Naomi T. Drake was forcibly taken from her foster home on Hazen Road at about 11:25 p.m. Friday by her birth parents, James Drake, 24, and Maria Trombley, 22, both of Plattsburgh.

A nationwide Amber Alert was issued Saturday.

State Police Lt. Scott Heggelke said Drake, Trombley and the baby were found this afternoon, driving west on Interstate 40 near Brownsville, Tenn., a little east of Memphis.

They were taken into custody by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

“We had some information that they could have been in Tennessee,” Heggelke said, so they put law-enforcement officials in that state on alert. “We had reason to believe they might be headed to Texas.”

No information was available today about the charges that Drake and Trombley face.

Bureau of Criminal Investigation Capt. Robert LaFountain said that there “was an assault and confrontation but no serious injuries” when Drake and Trombley took the baby Friday night.

He said it is not unusual for the birth parents to know the location of the foster home, although it does not happen in every case.

Drake and Trombley, who is pregnant, were allegedly impaired by drugs or alcohol when they went to the house for Naomi.

They drove off in a white, two-door 1991 Dodge Shadow sedan with a convertible top and license plate number ESC2421.
