SARANAC -- The Town of Saranac Advisory Committee seeks public input as it works to develop a Community Vision and Revitalization Strategy.
A workshop is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Saranac Town Hall, 3662 Route 3.
Committee Chair Gerald Delaney said the workshop is an important chance for residents to tell the committee members what they want to see happen in the town.
"There are so many possibilities to improve the quality of life in the town," he said. "It's so important that they show up and tell us what they want."
Delaney hopes 100 or more residents attend.
The goal is to develop community consensus about the vision of the town's future, identify key community assets and show how they might impact the future and reveal areas of concern that require town attention.
Other goals are to identify opportunities for community enhancement, such as recreational use of the Saranac River, state lands and conservation easements, revitalization of the hamlets and business development.
The Community Vision and Revitalization Strategy is funded by a $61,000 grant from the New York State Department of State Division of Coastal Resources through the Environmental Protection Fund Local Waterfront Revitalization Program, with assistance from Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury).
Residents are urged to discuss what they like and don't like in the town, what they want or don't want and what they feel is under utilized.
The town already has one project approved on 16 acres that it owns around the Town Park and Saranac River edge. Plans call for park expansion and cleanup of about 400 feet of riverbank.
Delaney said some consensus has developed for a walking and bicycle trail around the Pickett's Corners area.
He said representatives of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail are scheduled to visit to see if a campsite could be developed in the area. The park would make a good location, Delaney said, as it is within walking distance of a convenience store.
Once developed, the strategy will serve as a guide as the town makes decisions about its future. It will also provide regional, state and federal entities with an understanding of the town's goals and priorities and open doors to funding for community projects identified in the strategy.
Delaney said it is also a chance to get more people interested in the town's future.
It's a way to help residents see what is happening in the town and what can happen, he said.
