CHAZY — A young woman was the first U.S. service member to take advantage of the Blue Star Museums initiative offered by the Alice T. Miner Museum.
"Her parents live locally in Chazy," said Amanda Palmer, the museum's director/curator. "She was visiting. I offered her family to come in free with her ID. Her dad put a donation in the box anyway."
She hopes others in the military will come by as well.
"It's a wonderful opportunity for military families to experience museums for free."
The Alice is one of more than 1,000 museums across the country offering free admission to active-duty military personnel from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Through Saturday, Alice is offering free admission to friends who accompany active-duty personnel.
"They can bring their friends in for free."
The Blue Star Museums initiative is a partnership among Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts and museums like the Alice.
The museum's main exhibit at present commemorates the Civil War.
"That includes a letter written by Ulysses S. Grant, two documents signed by Abraham Lincoln and carte-de-visite photographs," Palmer said. "They were very popular during the Civil War era. They were used as postcards. Soldiers sent them to their families and used them as calling cards."
The exhibit includes the Lincoln foot bath from the museum's collection.
"Alice got it from another collector friend, who gave it to her," Palmer said. "We have engravings and photographs of Abraham Lincoln and military-rank certificates, some of them signed by Lincoln. It's a neat exhibit."
