Paul Smith's College assessing safety

MALONE — Officials at Paul Smith's College are starting the preliminary work to get a full-stop traffic light installed near its entrance.

Kenneth Aaron, the college's director of communications, said the idea came from concern over vehicle and pedestrian safety at the entrance, which is at the intersection of Route 86 and Route 30.

Pedestrians often walk a quarter to half mile on Route 86 to reach college venues, he said, and outdoor enthusiasts frequently cross the highway to get to Osgood and Chapel Pond and the state canoe launch on lower St. Regis Lake at the campus.

"We'd like to have it considered in the next federal transportation bill," Aaron said.

There are no engineering plans or designs yet. But the scope of work could include a light, device or sign to slow traffic on Route 30 and a full-stop light on Route 86 for drivers about to enter Route 30.

There could also be signs on Keese Mills Road and improvements made to the sight line on both highways, as well as the route to the soccer field and Gould's Garden.

The changes are just beginning to be discussed, and one of the first steps for the college is to gain approval from governmental agencies impacted by the project.

The Brighton Town Council and Franklin County Legislature have each approved resolutions supporting the college's efforts.
