Blue-green algae sprouts in Rouses Point

ROUSES POINT — A blue-green algae bloom has been identified in Lake Champlain behind the Rouses Point Village Office.

Mayor Francis “Bumper” Baker said the spot isn’t one where people swim or otherwise play in the water, but he wanted villagers to know that algae blooms can cause health issues for humans and animals.

“It’s not good for anyone,” he said.

Several years ago, two dogs died after exposure to blue-green algae on Point au Roche in the Town of Beekmantown. Earlier this summer, two beaches in Essex County were shut down for a time due to the presence of blooms there.

Rouses Point, which draws the water for its public system from the lake, cannot use its secondary intake while the bloom is there, the mayor said, as it is located in that area.

But the main intake is fine, he added.

“It goes almost to the middle of the lake.”

FYI...
  • computer.jpg In fan fiction, your favorite characters do what you want them to

When J.J. Abrams took over the "Star Trek" franchise in 2009, he boldly went where the series hadn't gone before — romantically — pairing Uhura with Spock. Many fans disliked the change. Some loved it. Others didn't care, because they just wanted to see Kirk and Spock make out.
