Former DEC Region 5 director named to Ti Revitalization Alliance

Former DEC director named as grant writer, fundraiser

TICONDEROGA — By LOHR McKINSTRY

The former head of New York state's Department of Environmental Conservation Region 5 has joined the Ticonderoga Revitalization Alliance as a grant writer and fundraiser.

Elizabeth "Betsy" Lowe of Lake Placid has been hired as the alliance's director of strategic partnerships and fundraising.

Lowe was one of the founders of the Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks in Tupper Lake, commonly called the Wild Center. She was formerly the managing director of the center and remains on its Board of Trustees.

She worked for the DEC for 25 years, leaving to start the Wild Center, then returning as Region 5 director in 2007. She resigned from DEC in November 2011.

Alliance Chief Executive Officer Justin Woods said they were fortunate to get Lowe on board.

"Her extensive experience in nonprofit management; building and sustaining strategic partnerships; fundraising; community and economic development; and visionary-project management; will play a vital role as the alliance and our partners move forward," he said in a news release.

"Betsy will be a tremendous asset as we work to revitalize our community and build an organization capable of restoring economic prosperity to the Ticonderoga area."

COMMUNICATION AWARD

Lowe said she will be working "on initiatives to revitalize historic Ticonderoga."

She graduated from Skidmore College with a bachelor's degree in biology and music. She has a master's degree in regional planning from Cornell University.

In 2001, Lowe was awarded the Adirondack Communicator of the Year award from the Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board.

The Ticonderoga Revitalization Alliance is a non-profit, local development corporation whose stated mission is to restore economic prosperity in the Ticonderoga region through public-private partnerships and investment opportunities.

Woods said Lowe will be working with him and the Board of Directors on the development and implementation of a fundraising plan, developing and sustaining partnerships, coordinating arts and economic development initiatives, and assisting with public relations.

Cornell University graduate student Anne Flusche also joined the alliance recently to do planning and will be working on her thesis project as part of her work with the group.
