▶ Local radio and newspaper advertisers are sending in entries for the first edition of the Champy Awards. The awards are meant to honor creative advertising and the winners, who will be selected in April, will be featured in a banquet later in the year.

▶ The city of Plattsburgh is still holding on to the $400,000 federal HUD grant they received last summer to help with the rehabilitation of homes near Pine Street. If the project delays into 1988 it could jeopardize the future applications to the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

▶ The Lake Champlain American Lung Association has upped the prizes for it's annual Fishing Classic — which is pretty impressive. Last year the Rev. Scott Gifford of Plattsburgh walked away with a $100,000 savings bond for the largest trout. This year the largest salmon and trout will each receive that very prize, with an additional fishing adventure package to Alaska, Northern Ontario and Nova Scotia.

50 YEARS AGO — 1962

▶ Dr. Robert Lopez's attempts to recruit some Port Henry people to partake in his annual Polar Bear Plunge in Lake Champlain didn't work out too well for him. Lopez ended up having to take the Polar Bear Plunge alone, "Some of the ones I asked are still running," he said with a chuckle.

▶ A Cadyville woman suffered first-degree burns after catching her housecoat on fire while cooking breakfast. The burning garment was shed as quickly as possible, but she still sustained burns across a large portion of her back. She is recovering in Plattsburgh Hospital.

▶ A pair of 14-year-old Keeseville boys were taken into police custody in connection with a string of burglaries in the area. The two admitted to breaking into the Keesevile Youth Center, Rex theater, Keeseville Bowling Alley, Marsha's Jewelry store and Knights of Columbus rooms. Police recovered $200, a diamond ring, a signet ring, cigarette lighters, candy, soda and other miscellaneous items.

75 YEARS AGO — 1937

▶ Adirondack Commercial School student Miss Dorothy DeGowin underwent a rare operation in Malone in which a spare rib located half an inch above her collar bone was removed by Dr. William Cone of Rockefeller Institute in Montreal.

▶ A gull met its end when golfer Judge E. J. Write, 78, went down to the Harold Gillick dock in Clayton to see how far he could drive a ball on the ice. One of Write's more airborne balls met a gull in flight head on and killed it on impact.

▶ Four boatloads of volunteer workers patrolled Lake Champlain for the bodies of Charles O'Neil and his two young sons, Harold, 10 and Allen, 9. The trio drowned in the lake about 200 yards offshore of Baron Rock after falling through the ice while fishing. The fourth member of their party, Robert Lawrence of Westport, was able to pull himself from the ice and go for help, though by the time help arrived the three had disappeared.

▶ 12-year-old William Rock of Champlain had his hand mangled after a dynamite cap in his hand exploded. Dr. Hubert Stiles of Chazy administered first aid and had the boy sent to the Plattsburgh hospital fully expecting the boy to lose his thumb, first and second fingers. The boy had told his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Rock, that he had gotten the cap from a school friend.

100 YEARS AGO — 1912

▶ Three miles of gas mains are set to be laid out through the city this summer by the Plattsburgh Gas & Electric Company.
