25 YEARS AGO — 1985 Camp Gabriels minimum-security prison in Brighton will conduct construction projects totaling nearly $1.5 million during 1985. Improvements include energy conservation to windows and state pilot wood-chip boilers.
The barking of one dog probably saved 25 others from perishing in an early morning fire at Chasands Boarding Kennels on Irish Settlement Road, Plattsburgh. Sande LeCalir and her son Billy were able to free the trapped dogs.
A room full of angry residents challenge the decision of the Altona Town Board to appoint Irene Gero, wife of former Supervisor Cecil Gero, to fulfill her husband's unexpired term. Cecil Gero pleaded guilty last month to one count of vote buying.
Labeling Lake Placid facilities for outdoor ice training "a disaster," officials with the U.S. speed-skating team say the team won't be back without better service. The associate complaints center on the alleged failure of the Olympic Regional Development Authority to provide ice for the team training in mid-October the last two years.
50 YEARS AGO — 1960 The Air Force releases $43.9 million for construction of an Atlas continental ballistic missile launching station at Plattsburgh Air Force Base. Work may begin shortly.
Plattsburgh Housing Authority signs contracts for construction of two low-rent housing projects. The contracts are for $1.4 million. Forty-eight units of housing for the aged are planned for the corner of Cornelia and North Catherine streets. Eighty-four more units will be built at Main Mill and South Catherine streets.
Transfer of a million square feet of Plattsburgh Industrial Park Development land is announced. The transfer is to Industrial Builders Ltd. of Montreal that paid more than $50,000 for the property.
Locations of nine proposed underground missile-launching sites in the Plattsburgh area are announced by the Air Force. They are Swanton and Alburg, Vt., and Champlain, Mooers Forks, Ellenburg, Chazy Lake, Clayburg, AuSable Forks and Willsboro.
75 YEARS AGO — 1935 A broken tow line is the cause of a series of accidents near Chateaugay when a truck backed down a hill, passed through a guard rail, tipped over a power-line pole and knocked it against a house bumping an owner out of bed, set the house on fire and put the power line out of commission leaving the Village of Chateaugay in darkness for several hours.
Three children are injured and four other members of the same family who were asleep had barely time to escape into sub-zero weather when fire levels a home near Brainardsville. The injured were a son and daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Allison Willis.
The largest tax sale ever held in Essex County brings in $11,080.92. There were 241 parcels sold and 394 went to the county for lack of bidders.
Three rooms in Malone's new Post Office will be used as chambers for the U.S. Court.
100 YEARS AGO — 1910 The Lozier Motor Co. is reorganizing under the laws of Michigan, but the plant in Plattsburgh will remain here. There had been rumors circulating that the plant would be closed in Plattsburgh.
The store of John W. Talford in Chazy was discovered on fire, and when the flames had been subdued, it was found the fire had been set to cover up a burglary.
In order to stop the operation of the dime picture show on Park Street in Tupper Lake, which is putting too much of a load on the municipal lighting plant, village fathers tell the owner he must install a transformer.
The Methodists of Plattsburgh will build a new parsonage. The brick building with stone trim will be located on Court Street.
