Double murder in Dannemora

CHAZY LAKE — State Police are searching for a Morrisonville man in connection with a double murder near Chazy Lake.

Capt. Robert LaFountain of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation said two people were found dead early this morning in a house located on Route 374 across from the intersection of Wilfred King Road in the Town of Dannemora.

At a press conference late this afternoon, Major Richard Smith Jr. of the New York State Police said the Plattsburgh Barracks received a call at about 3:54 a.m. from an occupant of the residence concerning a trespass taking place. A patrol was dispatched, and on arrival police found a man and woman deceased inside the home with gunshot wounds.

Police are looking for Anthony “Tony” V. Pavone, 52, of Morrisonville. The call to police identified Pavone by name, Smith said.

“He is a person we’d like to speak to relative to this investigation,” Smith said.

Pavone is a recently retired sergeant who worked at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. They are also looking for Pavone’s pickup truck, a black 2001 GMC Sierra with New York license plates EAK 3536.

Smith said anyone who knows Pavone, his whereabouts or the whereabouts of his truck is asked to call the police at 563-3761 or 911 immediately.

“Do not approach him. He should be considered dangerous,” he said.

Smith said no motive has been established and declined to describe the crime scene.

LaFountain, however, said, “Personally, I’ve never been to a homicide scene that was not brutal.”

State Police have the one-story white home at 2032 Route 374 marked off with police tape and are taking DNA evidence from the interior. They are being assisted by the State Police Violent Crimes team, Forensic Investigation team, Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, City of Plattsburgh Police Department, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie and Clinton County Coroner David Donah.

Smith said police have not been able to positively identify the deceased and will not release their names until they are able to do so. The Press-Republican has confirmed through sources that one of the victims is Tim Carter, 52, who owns the home where the deaths took place.

TOO CLOSE TO HOME

Neighbors expressed shock this afternoon.

Gerry Woodward, Brandon Poupore and Kirstie Kelley were at Woodward’s home, just to the south. Woodward said she heard something.

“It’s kind of shocking. We heard a noise but didn’t know what it was,” she said.

Kelley said knowing a double homicide took place next door is unnerving.

“It’s pretty scary considering nothing like this ever happens around here.”

Woodward said Carter had been their neighbor for 15 to 20 years. She said he was a quiet guy who kept to himself.

“He didn’t stick his nose in anyone’s business.”

He ran the convenience store that used to be in the building before he converted it to rental units, she said.

Poupore is a member of the Dannemora Fire Department. When he responded, there were about 10 police cars already there.

Firefighters were told to man the station as police secured the crime scene, Poupore said.

Scott and Rebecca Langlois live just to the north of Carter’s home. They said they didn’t know much about what happened other than someone had been killed.

“It’s too close to home for me,” Mr. Langlois said.

He expressed confidence that the police would solve the case quickly.

“There’s plenty of help out there. They’re going to find them.”

Rick Coryer and his wife, Deb, live to the south. He’s known Carter most of his life, although they weren’t close friends.

“He seemed to be a nice guy,” Mr. Coryer said.

He said Carter grew up on Hugh Herron Road in the Town of Dannemora, and they both attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School. Coryer said Carter was a civilian maintenance employee at Clinton Correctional Facility.

He said the homicides made him a little nervous, especially when it happened so close.

“It’s pretty unbelievable. You have to be observant a little bit,” Coryer said.

Times have changed since his parents owned his house.

“We used to have an open-door policy. We never locked the doors,” Coryer said. “Not anymore.”

Shelby Spear is the manager at Stewart’s in the Village of Dannemora. The store opens at 5 a.m., and she said her first customer said several State Police cars were at Wilfred King Road, and troopers told people not to hang around the area.

“You just don’t think something like this is going to happen so close to where you live and work,” she said.

The murders are the latest in a few weeks of difficult developments in Dannemora.

“It’s awful tragic, and I hope they catch whoever is responsible,” said Dannemora Town Supervisor Americo “Ves” Pivetta, who, in the month he has held the position, has seen his community go through a fire that burned down the Town Garage, the proposed closure of Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility and now a double homicide.

State Police planned to hold a press conference at about 3 p.m. today at the Dannemora Fire Station. That could change based on further developments.
