KeyBank to close Dannemora branch

DANNEMORA — KeyBank plans to close its Dannemora branch.

KeyBank Vice President and Director of Public Relations for the Northeast Region Therese Myers said the branch is to be closed on Sept. 28.

“The decision was made to consolidate that branch into one of the Plattsburgh branches,” she said.

That came as the result of a periodic review of KeyBank’s operations to ensure the company is operating efficiently.

Myers said the Dannemora branch had five employees. All of them were offered and have accepted positions at other KeyBank branches in the area, she said.

The bank is required to provide 90-day notice when a branch is going to close. Those letters went out Friday, Myers said.

Village of Dannemora Mayor Michael Bennett said he was told Tuesday afternoon the branch would close. He is concerned because the nearest KeyBank branch is now on Route 3 in the Town of Plattsburgh.

“A lot of our seniors have been using that branch for 40, 50 years,” he said. “I’m concerned about them trying to get down there.”

Bennett plans to discuss possible alternatives at the Village Council meeting on Thursday. Those include finding a different bank to locate there, or maybe the Dannemora Federal Credit Union, which has an office on the Clinton Correctional Facility annex property just east of the prison.

“That would be a good fit for them,” he said of the KeyBank building, located at 1166 Cook St.

Myers said customers with a safe deposit box have been offered one year of free rental at another branch.
