Quebec man drowns on Lake Champlain

PERU — A Canadian man who was boating with his family on Lake Champlain drowned Saturday evening.

State Police based in Plattsburgh said Sunday that at about 5:28 p.m. Saturday they were notified of a possible drowning near Valcour Island off the Town of Peru.

Marius D’Eschambeault, 57, of Grandby, Quebec, dove into the lake to check the anchor of the sailboat he was on, police said. He never resurfaced.

The U.S. Coast Guard was called in, and D’Eschambeault was brought to shore and taken to CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, where he was pronounced dead.

Clinton County Coroner David Donah was notifed.

An autopsy will be performed on Monday at CVPH Medical Center.

The Coast Guard does not believe that alcohol was a factor in the accident. No safety violations were noted during the investigation.

The investigation is continuing, State Police said.
