CHAMPLAIN — At least 10 fire departments responded to a structure fire at 1139 Route 11 Friday night.

Clinton County Dispatch called for mutual aid from Rouses Point, Ellenburg Center, Ellenburg Depot, Altona, West Chazy, Chazy, Cadyville, Churubusco, Beekmantown, Isle la Motte, Vt., and Champlain Emergency Medical Services at about 9:15 p.m. for a structure fire ½ mile west of McDonald's on Route 11 off Exit 42 on I-87. Auxiliary services were called for about 11 p.m. The Mooers department was on standby while South Plattsburgh was called for about 11:15 p.m.

According to dispatch, there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story structure, which used to house Pole-Lite Industries. Several tankers and aerial support responded to fight the blaze and numerous calls were made to help with the water supply to douse the roughly 200-by-200-foot building.

At about 10:30 p.m., dispatch called for a second Champlain EMS unit.
