Boy released from hospital following serious injury

PLATTSBURGH — A 10-year-old badly injured in a recent accident has been released from CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Dawson J. Dessureault was a front-seat passenger in a vehicle driven by his stepfather, Phillip M. Garza, 29, of Chazy, last Friday.

Garza was driving the 1997 Ford Taurus south on State Route 22 in Mooers near Gonyo's Tree Farm at around 9:12 a.m., when he crossed into the northbound lane, said a release from the Clinton County Sheriff's Office.

Police said the vehicle exited the roadway and struck a tree.

While Garza managed to get out of the car, the child had to be extricated by a crew from Beekmantown Volunteer Fire Department.

Dessureault suffered severe leg trauma and underwent surgery, the Sheriff's Office said.

Garza was also taken to the hospital after the crash, but was treated then released.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by New York State Police, the U.S. Customs Air Marine Unit, New York State Department of Transportation and New York State Electric & Gas.

Garza was issued a ticket for failure to keep right.
