Malone man sentenced for arson of own home

MALONE — A Malone man who burned down his own house was sentenced to five-years probation and must serve the first six months in Franklin County Jail.

Wade Rivers, 51, of Elm Street was also ordered to pay $41,750 to the insurance company that paid off a claim when the home burned, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

He was indicted by a grand jury for third-degree arson for the Aug. 20, 2011, fire and pleaded guilty to the charge in July.

Prosecutors said Rivers and his wife were co-owners of a home in Constable, but when the two of them broke up, he got angry and set the place on fire, ruining the home and many of her personal belongings.

The two are reportedly in divorce proceedings.
