Lake Placid hunter found dead in the woods

LAKE PLACID — LAKE PLACID — A three-day search for Russ Beede ended sadly Wednesday.

The life-long resident of Keene and Lake Placid was found dead by search-and-rescue crews around 2:30 p.m. about a half-mile from where he parked his truck Saturday morning.

He had gone into the woods, hunting off South Meadow Road — a popular deer hunting spot among locals.

“It’s a wilderness area, rugged terrain,” said New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Capt. Robert LaFountain of the spot where Beede, 63, was found in the intensive search.

DEC coordinated an all-out search focused on terrain around South Meadow Road and Mount Jo, a lower ridge at the edge of Heart Lake.

Beede’s family had worked years ago as caretakers of the property.

MASSIVE SEARCH

Department of Environmental Conservation Spokesman Dave Winchell said there were 42 people, including 30 volunteers, 16 forest rangers and members of the State Police Special Operation Response Team, who assisted with several canine units scouring the forest Wednesday.

He said the recovery and ensuing investigation was turned over to the State Police.

There is no evidence of foul play, LaFountain said.

No cause of death would be released until after an autopsy Wednesday night or Thursday.

‘GONE TOO SOON’

Beede leaves behind former wife and friend Linda Beede and their children, including Amanda Beede and her children, who live and go to school in Lake Placid.

After searching on foot from a base near the Adirondack Mountain Club Loj each day, family and friends kept an online vigil for the missing man via social media.

Facebook posts shared hopes and prayers and calls for volunteers to help find a man they called “Papa,” a biker who rode a Harley Davidson.

Casey Corrow, a friend of the Beede family, dedicated a song to Mr. Beede on her Facebook wall late Wednesday afternoon.

“Born to amuse, to inspire, to delight,” Michael Jackson’s soft eulogy goes — “here one day, gone one night, like a sunset dying with the rising of the moon, gone too soon, gone too soon.”

Mr. Beede was a longtime employee of the Town of North Elba Highway Department.

Discovery of his passing marked a difficult day in adjoining, close-knit Adirondack communities of Lake Placid, Keene and Jay with tragedy unfolding in rapid succession. Earlier in the day, Jay residents Theresa Caito, 75, and her grandson Henry, 7, were killed in a car accident.
